Dawn Clements’ (1958-2018) was an American educator and contemporary artist. She is well known for her panoramic, large-scale drownings of interiors. She was documenting and describing her drawings as a durational experience. Often she was inspired not just from the interior which surrounds her/ from her own life, but also she found source material from old melodramas movies. Her ideology of her work was the idea of the home, a place of both comfort and confinement. That’s why she has very calm and even romantic atmosphere in some of her drawings. Maybe that’s why she is known as an artist who put her life into her panoramas.

Dawn Clements’s drawings are generally in ballpoint pen or sumi ink. Often she used multiple sheets of crinkled paper, stitched together into irregular shapes in a big size that  sat in opposition. Ms. Clements’ had a work, which portrays an installation of fruit, electronics, foil packets and other items even including a box of Xeloda(a cancer medication) spread out across three tables, is representative of several characteristics of Ms. Clements’s art. For one thing, it has a diaristic quality to it, the artist seeming intent on documenting everything around her. For another, it’s the shapes are unusual and sometimes confusing. What makes it even more interesting and becomes an art piece which you want to view in detail. In the talk with Vermont, Dawn Clements’ explained the care that she took with details and accuracy, what you can't say when you first look at her art work without analyzing it.

She made such works, she said, not simply by copying a still image from a melodrama movie, but by watching the whole film and combine a selection of interior shots from different angles what gave her work a sense of abstraction.

In my opinion each of Dawn Clements’ art work is unique, but I can see that her style of paining hardly uses any sense of form and only isolated pieces of texture to get a volume. As a result tone is being used to describe/delegate a light source to the work and the darker parts with the straight aggressive lines makes the art work more dramatic and creates an atmosphere of something darker almost sinister which can be seen in the piece above.
